Fermacampione is a bi-monthly editorial project, on Forme Uniche official website. Each issue is dedicated to an artist or designer who is invited to share their archival materials. The contents are proposed in the form of scans and photocopies, to show the gaze and structural ideas of those who work designing.
Fermacampione pierces and holds together all the documents in a booklet: texts, images, objects, scanned and printed to create a database of ideas that can generate other ideas. This material should be collected and organized with care. It should be reproduced, copied, shared. It should be assembled like the pieces of an object, because overall ideas are what generate meanings.
Fermacampione is the joint that connects all those creators who choose to design ideas, believing that designing a chair, making a sculpture, or creating a dish all follow unexpected similar processes of making.
Jacopo Martinotti transforms Fermacampione Issue#5 into the opening sequence of a B/W feature film. The slides on each page make up the title of a film that is not visible to the reader. The heading is a reference to a real journey on the hiking trail ROMA, in the north of Italy, built by Mussolini as a monument to one of the places of the first World War. The artist tells it through the images of a monumental landscape and the story of a place with a strong historical meaning, in contrast with a more intimate and familiar atmosphere.
Fermacampione #4 has been designed as a collection of written messages and figures, now impossible to read. Preface by the editor claims that time and weather agents have transformed the publication, changing lines and characters into unknown symbols without meaning. As a graphic designer Paola Bombelli is interested in words as abstract shapes. Here she shows a collection of characters and written words manipulated with a scanner. She highlights the way she looks at her work, imagining new shapes to deliver new messages.
Sara Ravelli reflects upon the relationship between love and violence, innocence and aggression. She develops narratives using everyday objects that show how these conflicts are embedded in daily life. For Fermacampione Issue#3 she presents a collection of images from her archive: children’s tissues, packaging gifts, laces and printed fabrics, telling stories on the edge between cuteness and violence.
Alecio Ferrari presents a selection of pictures from his personal archive. Week after week he took photos of his fridge, observing how our personal habits and behaviors can influence simple actions like storing and consuming food. Blurred and overexposed images show a refrigerator changing constantly its inner composition, and suggest the idea of a small life section cut in tiny pieces and then reassembled page after page.
Federico Cantale shows a small part of those materials that makes him able to shape his practice. Extracts of books are marked by drawings of alchemical symbols which interfere with the reading; showing the artist’s hidden desire of transforming ideas and thoughts into something else.
